How much does a smog check cost?

Prices depend on the state and the station. In California a smog check usually costs about $30–70 plus the state certificate fee; in states that run their own emissions programs the fee is often a flat amount set by the state.

What happens if my car fails the emissions test?

You get a report with the reason for the failure, and the car needs repairs before a retest. Many states give a free or discounted retest within a set number of days, and some offer repair assistance or waivers when repair costs pass a limit.
